Sade’s ‘Wrinkle in Time’ song another notch in long history of career hiatuses

Movie fans are doubtlessly excited for the Ava DuVernay-directed adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s legendary children’s book A Wrinkle in Time, opening in theaters March 9. However, the film has produced a sweet treat for music fans as well. Iconic soul singer Sade’s “Flower of the Universe,” her first new song in seven years, which she provided for the soundtrack, dropped March 5 via a tweet from Jay-Z/Kanye West producer No I.D.

It’s been quite a while since we’ve heard from this artist, but that’s not surprising. Sade — which is not only the stage name of the singer (her real name is Helen Folasade Adu) but also the name of her band — has a long history of lengthy gaps in her résumé. Known to be reclusive, she famously took a seven-year break after 1992’s groundbreaking release Love Deluxe. She followed that with a 10-year gap between 2000’s Lovers Rock and 2010’s Soldier of Love.

During the period following 1992, Sade gave birth to a daughter, Mickailia, and as she told Fader in 2000, she then examined the potential effects that fame might have on her family: “After you make a record your life changes. Beforehand I was living my little anonymous life. But that whole machine that starts going when you make a record … it was all about how that change was going to affect my life, and my new life as a mother.”

In 2010, she gave another of her rare interviews, gracing the cover of Ebony. There she explained, “I’ve had my ups and downs in the years between these albums. That’s partly why I’m able to write songs that people in some way can hear. I express feelings, real feelings.”

Sade’s daughter came out as transgender in 2016 and is now known as Izaak Theo. The singer continues to be family-centric and reluctant to embrace the spotlight, causing even director DuVernay to wonder if she’d be able to get a song from her.

“I never thought she’d say yes, but asked anyway,” DuVernay tweeted last month. “She was kind + giving. A goddess. We began a journey together that I’ll never forget.”

A Wrinkle in Time stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling; the soundtrack also features songs by Demi Lovato, Sia, and Kehlani.
